The Erie Times News, our “local” newspaper, which is part of the Gannett | USA TODAY NETWORK, is committing itself to better “reflect the community’s diversity.” They published two articles, here and here, explaining in greater detail what they mean and they even include charts and graphs.
Many of us in Erie County have long held out hope they would do this, but when reading their articles it quickly becomes apparent their definition of diversity and ours isn’t quite the same, theirs is confined to race and gender. Evidently to diversify you sprinkle in a few more individuals from each group and you can then see at a glance when you walk into the newsroom and offices whether or not they’ve become more diverse, it’s visual diversity.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they became more diverse in opinion, as well? Where is the graph or chart indicating political party affiliation? How about a chart that shows how many voted for President Trump in 2016 or plan to in November?
Since Erie County voted for Donald Trump in 2016, to better reflect the community they serve, at least half of the paper’s management and employees should support him, too, right?
