The local news yesterday reported 6 new COVID-19 deaths in Erie County. Both Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper and Erie County Department of Health Director Melissa Lyon couldn’t say whether the deaths involved nursing home residents.
Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper also reported six deaths due to COVID-19 complications since Friday. It’s among the county’s highest number of deaths reported over three days since the pandemic started in March.
The increase in COVID-19 deaths comes about a month after a surge in cases, primarily among the county’s nursing homes. However, Erie County Department of Health Director Melissa Lyon said she doesn’t know if the recent deaths involved nursing home residents.
Local news media are failing on the basics
News stories on GoErie.com and YourErie.com reporting the new cases and deaths simply repeat what they were told, but no one bothered to check the publicly available data from Pennsylvania that would have answered the question.
The answer is yes, all six of the new deaths reported in Erie County are from nursing homes or long term care facilities. We showed you here that the previous Erie County total from those facilities was 33 and now it’s 39. If a reporter is reading this, that’s a difference of 6.
Do reporters even ask questions or do research any more? The mystery of where the deaths occurred could have been solved in 10 seconds with the click of a mouse.
What is going on here? With county officials, this is either willful ignorance or they are deliberately trying to hide the information from you. In the case of the news media, they’re not doing the most basic research and follow up.
If this is the new normal, I don’t like it and I bet you don’t either.
End the state of emergency in Pennsylvania, fully open the schools now and get everyone else back to work, to do otherwise is pure politics.
Update – one fewer deaths now reported by the state
Pennsylvania just updated their numbers for Erie County COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes and long term care facilities, reducing it by one. You have to wonder what these people are doing.
What would really be nice to see is a huge reduction in the reported cases and deaths since we now know the testing is reporting far too many, plus 94 percent of deaths have COVID along with several other causes.
